Suitable for portable handheld medical devices: single channel Quad-Mode LED driver

ON Semiconductor has introduced the CAT3661's new single-channel Quad-Mode LED driver for ultra-low power LED applications such as portable handheld medical devices .

Anthony Russel, director of LED power products at ON Semiconductor, said: "For portable electronics designers, energy efficiency and small size are often the top priorities. The CAT3661 low-power Quad-Mode LED driver utilizes patented technology to fully address these requirements. With the combination of small form factors and long battery life, we are introducing new battery-powered product designs that meet the needs of end users."

The CAT3661 uses a patented architecture with integrated fault protection and fault diagnosis to drive a single LED backlight at up to 5mA. Soft start current limiting and short circuit protection make this new device ideal for button battery powered devices. Typical applications include low-power liquid crystal display (LCD) backlights and a wide range of portable handheld backlights including medical devices.

Available in a T3F x-16 package of only 3mm x 3mm x 0.8mm (height), the CAT3661 provides a useful solution for engineers looking for new designs with limited board space. This new device provides low noise input ripple and constant switching frequency, enabling the use of small external ceramic capacitors, further saving space and total system cost. The four-mode charge pump supports a wide range of input voltages from 2.0V to 5.5V, and also provides the CAT3661 with peak energy efficiency levels of up to 92%, up to 10% higher than traditional energy-efficient 1.5x three-mode charge pumps. The device's typical quiescent current is only 150μA in all operating modes at full load, with zero current shutdown, which promotes reduced power consumption and ensures long battery life of the application.
